Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is a form of pneumonia caused by a fungus, Pneumocystis jirovecii. The etiologic agent was originally described as a protozoon called Pneumocystis carinii, recently it was reclassified and renamed Pneumocystis jirovecii.
